Ubuntu/Linux Setup
- Download the appropriate version of Klink's software for
your Ubuntu installation by tapping below. If you're not sure if
your setup is 32-bit or 64-bit, please see the suggestions at this
Ubuntu help page.
NOTE: The binaries within the .deb package file are statically linked with minimal dependencies. Thus, the package can be converted to other formats using the "alien" utility in most Linux distributions.
- Connect your Android device to your computer with a USB cable.
- Pull down the Android notification bar. You should
see an item like "USB connected" or "USB connection type".
Tap on it so that your computer can access the files on your
device. Choose "Mount" if you are asked. On some devices you
must further select a mode called "USB Mass Storage". If you do
not see a USB storage mode, you can try "Media Transfer Mode"
(MTP), which should work with recent versions of Ubuntu.
Note: Some devices require that "USB debugging" be disabled in order to mount the device as a removable drive. If you're having problems with enabling USB mass storage mode, try disabling USB debugging temporarily, which you can do by pulling down the notification pane and tapping on the "USB debugging" notification item.
- Ubuntu should detect a new removable drive. Open it up and
choose the "download" folder. Navigate to the downloaded .deb file
(klink_1.07_i386.deb or
klink_1.07_amd64.deb)
and open it to install.
Note to 64-bit users: If, for some reason, you wish to use the 32-bit .deb file, you may do so, as it has minimal dependencies and should be compatible with your system as long as you have the ia32-libs compatibility package installed.
- After installation, eject/unmount your Android device via
the Ubuntu file browser, just to be safe. Then, turn off the
USB mass storage mode on your Android device by pulling down
the notifications menu.
NOTE: If you used Media Transfer Mode (MTP), you do not need to turn off the storage mode on the device, as it is always enabled when the device is connected to a computer.
- Now, you are ready to start the connection.
- Make sure that your Android device is connected to your computer via USB.
- Tap "Start" from within Klink's Android application. Be sure to follow any prompts that appear in the app, particularly those about enabling USB debugging mode.
- Finally, run the command klink from a terminal on your PC.
More documentation is available in /usr/share/doc/klink/README.gz or by running klink -h from the commandline to see a list of available flags.
